Day 218 (1st February 2006) So we are into February already - it's going real quick. Anyway I caught the bus at lunchtime to go to Airlie Beach, I got there at 2ish and checked into the hostel as usual. I had to go down to the Southern Cross office to check in for sailing tomorrow and to pick up my stinger suit for snorkelling. In the evening I went out for a couple of beers, Airlie beach is really nice, there is a nice lagoon here to swim in and the nightlife is awesome. I think I may stay here an extra couple of days after the sailing instead of going to Townsville.....

Day 217 (31st January 2006) We all arrived in Mackay this morning at 7.30am. I managed to grab a couple of hours of sleep on the bus so I was actually feeling alright. We grabbed some breakfast in a cafe before heading to the hostel for check in, the hostel is alright but there are a lot of aussies living in it. I think they have all come here for work. It seems a very quiet place, in the afternoon we went out down to Mackay marina - which was like a kind of modern Port Solent. In the evening we decided to check out the nightlife and to be honest it was pretty poor, most of the pubs were shut by 9pm. We only found one irish pub open and even that shut at 10!....there was one club called Pulse that we went into for a beer and that was pretty rubbish. We ended up going to bed at 11.30 - Don't go to Mackay it's a load of @#$% - I leave tomorrow for Airlie beach.

Day 216 (30th January 2006) Checked out of the hostel at 9.30am and had to wait around until the bus at 5.10pm to Hervey bay. I decided to follow Mark and Louise (two cool people from our Fraser island group) up to a place nearer to Airlie beach called MacKay. We got on the overnight bus from Hervey Bay at 8.20pm to take us to MacKay.......

Day 213 (27th January 2006)- Today I woke up at 6.30am because the tent was too hot to sleep in, most other people soon got up and we made some breakfast before packing up the camp and heading up to Indian Head rock where we took a 40 min walk along the beach up to the champagne pools. We all went for a swim here as it is not part of the sea and is safe for swimming. It is not possible to swim in the ocean here as there are sharks and too many jellyfish. After that we walked back again (another 40mins) and then headed to a place further back down the island called Lake Wabby, there was another 40 minute walk through a forest to get there but it was so worth it as there was a massive sand dune there that you can roll down directly into the lake. We all went swimming in the lake - it was really nice. We all then walked back to the camp and had some dinner, in the evening we played cards and drank some wine and beers, it was cool. Another very late night though at 3am....

Day 212 (26th January 2006)- Australia Day We all managed to get up ok and had pancakes for breakfast then we were all put into our groups and shown how to load up the top of the landcruisers. It took about 2 hours in total to get all the camping gear sorted and loaded on with the food, alcohol, cutelery etc. and we were also given so more tips about driving. We finally left at 10.30am and drove down to the barge to take us across to Fraser Island. We decided as a group to head straight up to Indian Head at the top of the island. It is about a 3 hour drive to get there and we were unable to drive on the beach any later than 3pm - luckily we arrived at 2pm and set-up camp with 2 other groups. On the way up to Indian Head we stopped at Eli Creek for a swim and also at the Maheno shipwreck to get some photos. At the camp we had some lunch and took a walk around, for dinner we had steak and potatoes and also a little party in the evening - it was excellent as we have such a good mix of sound people in the group - everyone is really nice.

Day 211 (25th January 2006) Got the bus to Rainbow Beach, I am staying at a hostel called Dingos for 1 night before leaving to do the 4WD safari on Fraser Island tomorrow. Had a 2 hour briefing about safe driving on the island and how to drive the landcruiser then we got put into a group of 11 people. Luckily we got a good group of people there are 9 Brits and 2 Germans. We spent the evening getting to know each other a bit better over a couple of beers, tomorrow we are up at 6.30 to get breakfast and load the 4WD's ready to leave.

Day 210 (24th January 2006) Milling around the hostel again today, it's too hot to go and do anything between 10am -3pm. I can barely walk 5 metres without getting drenched in my own sweat. Might pop out a bit later to see some more of this place, it's quite small though so not too much to see unless I do a river cruise but that's gonna cost money and I'm well over budget. I need to cut down on spending which is proving to be difficult...tomorrow I leave for Rainbow Beach....

Day 209 (23rd January 2006) Left Brisbane today to go to Noosa Heads. Noosa Heads is a quiet kind of place, it seems like quite a rich area to me. There are loads of big houses on the waterfront. I got here at lunchtime and headed out in the afternoon to walk to a viewpoint overlooking the beach. Walked down to the supermarket in the evening to get some grub and then spent the rest of the night in the bar. Wanted to get the free courtesy bus tomorrow to Steve Irwins zoo but it was fully booked out, so unfortunately looks like I won't be going. I've also heard from people that have been already that Steve is very rarely there - so the chance of seeing him is poor. Anyway I guess I will save a bit of money...

Day 207 (21th January 2006) Today I decided to go and do something a little bit cultural so I went to check out the Queensland museum and art gallery. The best thing about it was that it's free entry so I can't complain. In fact it was pretty good and apparently the biggest gallery in Australia. The museum was pretty good too, there was loads of stuff to see. After that I walked along the south bank of the river to check out the artificial beach. Yeah we are in the middle of a city but there in a man made beach with lifeguards and all sorts...bizarre. In the evening I went to the bar in the hostel and by coincidence bumped into someone that I met in Vietnam who is now living in Brisbane and also someone else that has been to Fareham before...it's such a small world!

Day 206 (20th January 2006) Today I went to do a guided tour around the Castlemaine XXXX brewery. It was actually a really good tour learning about the history of XXXX and also seeing the beer making process. The best part was at the end where you get to sample 4 beers for free! I met some other people on the tour and went back to continue drinking with them. Later on in the evening we went to a couple of bars in "the valley" - basically this is the nightspot in Brisbane. Unfortunately since I arrived in Brisbane the weather has been pretty poor - in fact it has been raining on and off everyday, I hope it gets better soon.

Day 205 (19th January 2006) Got the bus to Brisbane today, luckily the hostel was right by the transit centre so didn't have far to walk. The hostel is called 'Tinbilly' and it reminds me a bit of Wake up! in Sydney - very modern, clean dorms and a bar downstairs. In the afternoon I went for a walk around the centre of the city, the place was really busy for a Thursday, apparently it's like that all the time here! In the evening I went for a beer in the bar and met some people from the hostel.

Day 204 (18th January 2006) Woke up this morning feeling much much better, me and Meg (one of the Canadian girls in my dorm) headed down into the centre to catch a trip on the aquaduck. Now the aquaduck is basically an amphibious vehicle, it's half truck half boat. We went on the 1 hour trip around Surfers and around to the posh parts of town. The trip was not really worth the $30 it cost but at least it was something to do here. Tomorrow I leave early in the morning to head to Brisbane for 4 days over the weekend.

Day 203 (17th January 2006) Due to yesterdays events I actually spent the whole day in bed feeling very sick. I had a very very quiet day trying to sort myself out and watching tv in the dorm.

Day 202 (16th January 2006) Got on the bus today at 1pm to head to Surfers Paradise, I had to set my watch back 1 hour because in Queensland they don't use daylight saving time like in New South Wales, it meant an extra hour. After arrival at the Surf 'n' Sun backpackers I headed out with another guy I met on the bus to take a look around and grab some grub. Surfers Paradide is like skyscraper central, it's basically one big holiday resort with loads of restaurants and nightlife. When we got back to the hostel we met some other Canadian girls and had the $5 punch and then the people that run the hostel took us out to some 70's nightclub - pretty cheesy but we didn't stay long we chose to go and get some vodka and go back to the hostel...the rest is history....

Day 201 (15th January 2006) I'm just chilling again today and getting all my stuff prepared ready to leave tomorrow for Surfers Paradise. I'm going to be spending 3 days there and then onto Brisbane for 4 days. From this point forward I'm not really staying anywhere for more than 4 days, I've only got 4 weeks left to get moving up the coast and get all my pre-book trips done. Also I'm going to try and check out a theme park called Dreamworld and ofcoure Steve Irwins Australia Zoo which is just north of Brisbane...

Day 200 (14th January 2006) There's not much else to do here in Byron apart from sit on the beach, surf, or go and drink. So today I was just chilling out, in the evening we went out to Cheeky Monkeys which is a crazy pub/club where people just go crazy and dance on the tables. It was ok but the place was completly rammed, you know the kind of place where your drink gets spilt everywhere...

Day 199 (13th January 2006) I was just milling around at the hostel when I got a phone call from Steve (the guy I met in Coffs harbour). He had just turned up in Byron for a couple of nights and he phoned to ask if I facied a couple of beers down the pub. Ofcourse I couldn't refuse an offer like that! Unfortunately a couple of beers down the pub turned into a whole afternoon and evening of beers, we bought a crate (or slab as they call it) and sat down on the beach. We met some other interesting people and got a warning from the police (drinking in public places is prohibited!) Ooops...
